What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last set of adult molars to grow into the mouth. These molars usually erupt during a patient’s late teens or early 20’s. Most people grow in all 4 teeth, with 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom. However, some people grow in only 2 or 3. If wisdom teeth grow in right, they can be valuable to the mouth and may not require removal. However, most people must get these teeth extracted in order to prevent damage to the mouth.
Why should you get them removed?
The majority of the time, wisdom teeth grow in misaligned and require surgery for extraction. When the teeth grow in at an angle, this often results in painful crowding of the teeth, tooth decay, infection, and damage to the nerves and jawbone. This is why it’s important to get wisdom teeth removed before they begin to affect the the patient’s mouth structure and overall health.
In addition to misalignment, wisdom teeth can become impacted while growing in. This means that they are blocked by either soft tissue or the jawbone and only have the capacity to grow in partially. Due to this partial exposure, the area becomes prone to infection that causes in swelling, pain and stiffness of the jaw. With impacted wisdom teeth, the extraction is often done before the teeth begin to erupt in order to prevent any pain or swelling.
